ICEF 1 – 4

The first four International Conferences on Environmental Future (ICEF) were organised by Nicholas Polunin, the founder and first President of the Foundation for Environmental Conservation.

  • The 1st ICEF: The Environmental Future was held at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland from 27 June – 3 July 1971, with support from the Government of Finland among others. It provided significant inputs to the United Nations ‘Stockholm’ Conference on the Human Environment which was held the following year. The proceedings of the conference were published as a book:

  • The 2nd ICEF: Growth without Ecodisasters? was held Hotel Loftleidir, Reykjavik, Iceland from 5 – 11 June 1977, with support from the Government of Iceland. The proceedings were published as:

  • The 3rd ICEF: Maintenance of the Biosphere was held at the University of Edinburgh, UK, from 24 – 26 September 1987. The proceedings were published as:

  • The 4th ICEF: Surviving with the Biosphere was held at Hotel Agro in Budapest, Hungary from 22 – 27 April 1990, with support from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The proceedings were published as:
